NP #86: 43 minutes with Coconut Harry… The man, the myth, the legend

If you’re familiar with Nosara then you’ve probably heard of, or may already know, ‘Coconut’ Harry Heinke. Harry is a fun guy with a solid Nosara history going back to the mid 90’s and I’m excited to share his episode with you.

Almost everyone traveling into Nosara is greeted by Coconut Harry’s old surf shop upon arrival into Guiones along Ruta 160. Harry sold the shop to ‘Coconut’ Steve Reyer (a previous Nosara Podcast guest) over a decade ago, yet his name continues to live on. In fact, Harry still enjoys a surf session followed by some cold Pilsens and a sunset more than anyone I know.

This episode covers: Harry’s journey to Nosara, introducing Nosara to Virginia Beach, the ‘old days’ of surf in Nosara about what the crowds and waves were like, opening and operating Coconut Harry’s Surf Shop, thoughts about Nosara’s growth, what he’s up to these days, his Nosara dislikes, 3 favorite restaurants, thoughts about politics these days and much more.

I hope you enjoy listening to Harry’s episode!

NP #85: Henry from El Local in 60 minutes

I had a great time speaking with Henry from El Local and I’m happy to share his episode. This was our first time speaking at length outside of El Local, the restaurant he manages, and it was fun getting to know him. Initially, I didn’t know how much he likes to laugh and joke around.

However, we share lots of laughs throughout this 60 minute episode as Henry shares his background and journey to Nosara, how he brought El Local to the upper tier of Nosara restaurants, what challenges him the most and what drives him to succeed, his daughter, some Nosara ups and downs, his take on aliens, what his favorite restaurants are and a bunch more. I hope you enjoy Henry’s Nosara Podcast!

NP #83: The Sacred Playground: What is this ‘Playground’ and why is it ‘Sacred?’ Mike and Lori show us their new adventure and explain what it is all about in 17 minutes

Michael Streda from Beach Dog Cafe and Lori Anne from Spirit Lounge are unique human beings. They seem to strengthen and challenge one another both personally and in their businesses. Their newest adventure, The Sacred Playground, is definitely not a ‘normal’ business concept… So I wanted to find out why these already successful Guiones business owners decided to go ‘all in’ manifesting this strange idea. This episode is Mike and Lori both explaining and sharing the experience of their newest project and I hope you enjoy it!

NP #80: Aric Ray and Mr. Kind: Being an author in Nosara, his personal story, a new family, and how he is transitioning childhood goals into reality

Aric Ray moved from Florida to Nosara 8 or 9 years ago and is bringing his life full circle. In fact, he’s currently writing children’s books and implementing projects from here in Nosara from ideas which originated decades ago.

He’s proud of his new family and is committed to doing what he loves. It seems like Nosara is allowing Aric to achieve his dreams and this is always inspiring to me. I wish him the best and hope you enjoy getting to know Aric in this Nosara Podcast episode.

NP #79: 25 minutes with Mr. Brandon Richardson

In Brandon Richardson’s initial episode of the Nosara Podcast we discuss Nosara during COVID times, make predictions about the borders and beaches reopening, recovery for Nosara’s smaller and larger businesses, give shout outs to the Nosara Food Bank, why he’s no longer taking waves for granted, his dislikes of social media, and finding positive things to do while learning to prioritize what’s most important in life through this situation.

Brandon has been through many of Nosara’s ups and downs in his time here. He survived the last financial crisis, a major earthquake, dengue, the intense competition and the many challenges of building his business (Wanderlust Realty) and living in a very small town…

But this Coronavirus situation is different. Now he’s out of the water. As you’ll hear in his episode, this proves extra challenging for this avid surfer and spear-fisherman… So I decided to check in with him to see what he’s up to and hear his thoughts.

I hope you enjoy hearing Brandon’s episode!

NP #78: Robert ‘Yogadude’ Busch in 21 minutes; This punk rock musician and author is not your normal yoga instructor. He talks about eating meat, getting angry while surfing, and much more in this episode.

This episode with Robert Busch is a fun interview and I enjoyed getting to know him further. To many, he is known as Yogadude, the author of The Dude Experience, to others he is a punk rock musician, to me he is someone I surfed with a bunch over the years and I didn’t know anything too much about him until our first podcast recording. It turns out he has a great deal to say and is a very interesting person.

    Image 12

The first thing I learned is he seems not to be a typical yoga instructor. He’s very blunt about his behavior now and in the past. He admits to eating meat (but now is changing over towards vegetarian), getting angry in the water when he misses waves, messing up a Beach Dog Cafe open mic night playing punk music, his past with conspiracy theories and all kinds of other things a typical yoga instructor might not do.

For me it was refreshing to hear his honesty, enthusiasm, and authenticity. I hope you enjoy getting to know Robert/Yogadude in this episode and look forward to having back on the Nosara Podcast in the future.

NP #77: Kyle Bombard‘s quarantine action plan and predictions in 6 minutes

This brief episode of the Nosara Podcast is to check in with Mr. Kyle Bombard and find out what he’s up to during these COVID-19 times plus get his prediction about the beaches reopening and a couple more items.

I’m not too surprised to hear what he’s been up to and think it is a great idea. Hopefully more people are doing the same thing.

We will have a full episode with Kyle come out post Coronavirus… But in the meantime, I hope you enjoy hearing from him.
