This Week In Nosara 44: Congrats Mer on beating cancer! Good & bad weather. Info Joe recouping & locals having fun

TWIN 44 is a super fun one which hopefully conveys a ‘real’ look at Nosara this time of year. We have some good weather & happy people, plus some bad weather & what it looks like on the rainy days. Not everyone is unhappy when raining though… Legendary figure Mimi is cooking authentic Tico food, Alex ‘Adub’ Wilksonson is enjoying the plants & creek by his house, Casa Tindaya. There’s a bunch of scenes in this episode & I hope you enjoy it!

This Week In Nosara 43: October good luck continues! G Love on way for Safari Benefit Show, get your tickets here w/QR code

Normally October the rainiest month of the year but it seems we got most of our rain out of the way in May, June, July & August.

Anyways, the locals in town enjoying lack of crowds & fun surf. Even Chico Serio is smiling in this video. Get out there & enjoy yourself if you’re in town. The crowds will be back soon enough along with the offshore winds.

Safari Surf School’s Benefit show with G Love & Friends is November 16th & there’s a Meet & Greet hangout at Tierra Magnífica with special music from both Theo Hill & The After Surf Band. Theo Hill is super talented piano player & frequently on TWIN episodes & I call him “Music Theo” & The After Surf Band is Tom, Rhea, Olo Max & myself & frequently playing these soundtracks for TWIN.

Music wise, the early TWIN videos were usually me messing around playing a guitar into computer. Then as new band started practicing our Saturday improv sessions at Olo Alaia were often the music & now these days having fun starting to include my daughter Kaiya & myself sometimes, too.

Music is fun & now that kids are older I’m getting back into it more heavily. I used to play upright bass in a bluegrass band before moving to Costa Rica & now I’m grateful so many talented musicians in town or passing through town.

If you have any original music you want to submit for TWIN soundtrack send it in & we’ll check it out.

  • This Week In Nosara #40 Late September 2024: Surf, Water Moratorium Updates, Old Honolei, Happy Birthday Brian!!!

This Week In Nosara #40 Late September 2024: Surf, Water Moratorium Updates, Old Honolei, Happy Birthday Brian!!!

This Week In Nosara #40 is late September 2024…Here’s basic outline of this episode:

    • Some quality surf photos & a couple videos from Kaiya at Surfing Nosara.
    • Take a look from the air Playa Guiones overlooking Las Huacas, Pelada, North Guiones, Main Street Calle Modelo, J & K sections, South Guiones, Punta Garza, Esperanza & South Las Huacas
    • Updates from the Playas de Nosara ASADA available to everyone on their Facebook page. They are providing updates about water outages, updates to the system, which areas are to be affected, community updates & answering questions.
    • The biggest update is water moratorium in place for new water approval letters. The ASADA can not say when this will change because we need to provide 20 year in advance coverage so need new wells & legal processing all to take place
    • Rich predicts existing construction & properties with water meters like K45 & ones with approved water letters like R6 will become highly sought after. However, there are not many properties with water letters in place
    • K45 is going on the market for sale (3000m2 with ocean view in K section & a water meter). It is the old Honolei Restaurant & house Brian & Kyle Bombard used to live in. Rich had birthday party there 15 years ago photo with a young Brian in the background & ironically today is Brian’s birthday! Didn’t know about that till after this was done.
    • Surf footage from Guiones thanks to Kaiya
    • Nosara Civic Association reminds us to celebrate 203 years of Independence!
    • NOCA leader Michel came on the Nosara Podcast; he’s an awesome guy check it out when you want to feel good
    • WCA water updates & need volunteers
    • MoviemientoGuardianes is doing awesome things!!
    • Stop by La Roca next time driving into or out of Nosara… Terrific views & great experience

  • This Week In Nosara #39; Mid September update w/some Playa Guiones surf & community updates

TWINicaragua #2 is up! Is a 38 minute journey of the Boom, Nahualapa, & Playa Colorado in Hacienda Iguana. Enjoy!

These past few weeks have been an adventure… The Nosara Podcast surf team (current lineup is ‘Shortboard’ Esteban, ‘Longboard’ Andy, Mike ‘Boo Boo’ Beazley, & EQ.Surf.Tv Ale) made their way up for special surf trip. EQ Surf Ale is making a real surf movie from the footage so stay tuned for this. I’m making a TWINicaragua 2nd episode from EQ Surf’s footage at the Boom, then after the NP surf team takes off there’s some more footage from local photographers like Ricki, Saul, German & Gabriel & then I head down to Playa Colorado at Hacienda Iguana.

The Boom is advanced level wave which breaks right by the shore. There’s expert level surfers there like Carlos Zuniga from Chancletas who is featured prominently in this TWIN episode. There’s a solid wipeout section, me struggling with shortboard at Boom, some detailed area footage of my favorite spot, Playa Nahualapa. Introduction to Troy Walker if you don’t know him already, a private skatepark on beach at Boom, & many fun waves with Shortboard Esteban & LB Andy. The locals there are extremely dialed in & a pleasure to watch navigate this expert level wave. I’m grateful for their hospitality & guidance. It 100% is NOT a wave for everyone & I recommend beginner & most intermediate level surfers visit other, safer areas. Or at minimum hire a true local to help you understand why this isn’t your standard beach break & definitely not Playa Guiones 🙂

For the Hacienda Iguana Playa Colorado section: It’s been 12 or 13 years since I’ve been there & I wanted to see what’s changed & such plus check out a Nosara client’s massive property he’s asking me to review, obviously surf, plus try to play golf.

Some super fun waves at Colorado’s & went golfing with new friend Cesar from StopNGoSurf. Overall pleasantly surprised although my favorite area is up north. The people are awesome for & it’s not just one neighborhood. Feels like Nosara 2005 or so & there’s actually community there.

Hopefully it goes family oriented or at least more of a nature type spot and not just hardcore, aggressive vibe. My first spot in Costa Rica was a place called Playa Junquillal, which was awesome, until it wasn’t. Thankfully up there places like Amaru & Grace’s GLO Cafe exist as well as the hardcore places.

There’s many impoverished people who want and deserve a better life. plus there’s a huge environmental opportunity if they start planting now & getting wildlife back to the area. Hopefully incoming people choose to be part of the solution as best they can.

Some people up there are scared of growth, & rightfully so. What I’ve learned over 2 decades in Latin America though is people are already going to go to great spots with good surf… There’s no stopping this.

There 100% is chance of making it better by at minimum getting people involved in empowering the local populace with education & opportunities, plus a focus on nature & wildlife.

So thank goodness for people like Drew Reinhart, she shared projects like Casa Armonía (https://www.mujeresquemueven.org/casa-armonia), & it is inspiring. A little bit of $ goes a long way up there, a $100 donation buys 2 bags of concrete for their facility where they help women with education, life skills, self preservation & care, physical & mental training for their safety & a better future. Check out their site to see something great launching.

Here’s just a tiny sample of screen shot photos from the upcoming movie. Music is going to be from our band After Surf, which is one of the opening acts for the G Love Benefit Show happening November 16th… Stay tuned for movie.
